Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute at St. David's Medical Center Staffers Earn Highest Honor by Heart Rhythm Society

AUSTIN, Texas—In May 2011, three staff members of the Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute (TCAI) at St. David’s Medical Center earned the highest honor by the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) at the 2011 HRS conference in San Francisco. TCAI staff members inducted as Fellows of the HRS were Barbara Thomas, R.N., director of electrophysiology services at TCAI; Rong Bai, M.D., researcher at TCAI; and Luigi Di Biase, M.D., Ph.D., senior researcher at TCAI.

“This distinction is a great honor,” said Barbara Thomas, R.N. “Dr. Bai, Dr. Di Biase and I join the ranks of the world’s most respected electrophysiologists by becoming TCAI research Fellows.”

The HRS is the international leader in science, education and advocacy for cardiac arrhythmia professionals and patients, and the primary information resource on heart rhythm disorders. Its mission is to improve the care of patients by promoting research, education and optimal health care policies and standards.

Fellowship in the HRS is bestowed upon the most esteemed members of the society for “significant achievements, service and prominence in the field of cardiac arrhythmia.” Fellows are elected by a vote and must receive letters of support from two current Fellows. Candidates must be active in HRS committees, hold certifications in their specialty and have contributed to or written at least five publications, two of which must be in peer-reviewed journals.

Andrea Natale, M.D., F.H.R.S., F.A.C.C., F.E.S.C., cardiac electrophysiologist and executive medical director of TCAI, and J. David Burkhardt, M.D., F.H.R.S., F.A.C.C., cardiac electrophysiologist at TCAI, are also Fellows of the HRS.
